Telia and Ericsson have launched what they claim is the Baltics’ first enterprise 5G private network at the latter’s supply site in Tallinn, Estonia. The private cellular network went live on 2 May 2023, ushering in the new era of Industry 4.0, driving efficiencies in productivity, agility and sustainability, and becoming the platform for innovation at the smart factory.
The Tallinn Supply Site is a strategic player in Ericsson’s global supply chain footprint, accounting for nearly half of new product introductions. The implementation of Ericsson Private 5G allows for dynamic new product development by enabling agile layout and design of the manufacturing facility.
The private 5G network will be used to support a variety of use cases, including:
Asset condition monitoring and management: The network will be used to collect data from sensors on machines and equipment, which can then be used to monitor their condition and predict when they need maintenance. This will help to improve uptime and reduce costs.
Computer vision: The network will be used to power computer vision applications, such as quality control and automated guided vehicles. This will help to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Digital twins: The network will be used to create digital twins of physical assets, such as machines and factories. This will allow for better planning and maintenance, as well as the testing of new processes and procedures.
Collaborative robotics: The network will be used to enable collaborative robots to work alongside humans. This will help to improve productivity and safety.
The launch of this private 5G network is a significant milestone for the Baltics. It demonstrates the region’s commitment to innovation and its readiness to adopt new technologies. The network is expected to have a positive impact on the economy and create new jobs.
Telia and Ericsson are committed to working together to support the digital transformation of the Baltics. This private 5G network is just one example of how they are working to bring new technologies to the region and help businesses to grow and succeed.
Sirli Männiksaar, country manager of Ericsson Estonia, said: “Our 5G private network enables advanced use cases and control capabilities that empower our daily operations. Ericsson’s supply site in Tallinn is proud to play a key role in the industry’s continued growth and success, delivering new products and smart solutions to customers worldwide.”
According to Ericsson, the global private LTE/5G market is projected to exceed USD 8.3 billion by 2026.
