After Friday’s UN resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East, the pistol-packing Czech Defence Minister, Jana Černochová, stormed that Czechia has no business in an organisation that sides with terrorists and does not respect the basic right to self-defence. Černochová is a notorious gun-rights activist, who is known to carry a pistol and possess an AR-15. Her country was one of just 14 who voted against the resolution. Czech Republic President Petr Pavel quickly rejected the idea of his colleague, stating that Czechia wants to remain an active international player and seek solutions to challenges such as human rights, sustainable development, and climate change. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said that while he understands Černochová’s indignation over the UN’s failure to condemn Hamas’ terrorist attack against Israel, there is no question of Czechia walking out of the UN in protest.
The Czech ambassador to the UN, Jakub Kulhánek, said the text of the resolution for a „durable and sustained humanitarian truce” in the Holy Land does not recognise Israel’s right to defend itself and its citizens against terrorism, lacks a demand for the release of hostages and does not include a clear condemnation of Hamas’ attack against Israel.
