All Safe Following Latvian Maritime Incident

2023/11/11
in Defence

A passenger ship, Amalie, encountered trouble at sea and listed on its route between the Ruhnu and Kihnu islands in the Gulf of Riga. The ship’s situation has stabilised and it continues its journey towards the Latvian coast. The ship is currently listed at an angle of 10-15 degrees, possibly due to shifting cargo. A helicopter team evacuated seven people to the island of Ruhnu, one of whom required medical attention. The helicopter then returned to Tallinn for refuelling, but the evacuation of people continued with the vessels that arrived at the scene. As of 6:30 a.m., Amalie has reached within three nautical miles of Latvian territorial waters, with 18 nautical miles to reach the Latvian coast. The journey is being secured by the Police and Border Guard. The Parnu police vessel Terje, and the research vessel Salme. A Latvian Navy ship has been dispatched from the Latvian side.

A police helicopter, volunteer and professional maritime rescuers from Kuressaare, Parnu, and Ruhnu units, and the naval ship Valve were involved in the rescue operation. The ship had 16 passengers and three crew members at the time of listing. The helicopter went on standby to the island of Ruhnu, but the situation was too risky for winching people from the ship at that time.
