Wild horses in Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina, are a common sight, with up to 1,000 currently living there. These horses are descendants of domestic horses that served people in agriculture. However, the lack of protection for these natural resources has left them vulnerable. The last time they were protected was over seven years ago, but it was short-lived. Some individuals are trying to care for the sick horses to give them a new chance to live.
The problem is not simple, as the private sector is looking for ways to protect horses, road users, and their habitats. Proposals include the formation of a ranger service or an increase in volunteers to care for the horses. However, the public sector cannot influence this, only through initiatives and private lobbying. Horses are currently being hunted for meat, which is a common knowledge and increasingly common occurrence. Private sector efforts are being made to pressure the public sector to protect these animals.
