The Baltic Council of Ministers (consisting the Prime Ministers of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), met in Tallinn Friday to discuss energy security and Ukraine.
They agreed to accelerate synchronisation of power systems with Central Europe and de-synchronise with the Russian and Belarusian grids. Latvian PM Krišjānis Kariņš said offshore wind energy projects were important in this regard. Lithuanian PM Ingrida Imonyte addressed the security situation in the region and discussed sanctions against Russia and Belarus. The three Baltic states are looking to disconnect their power grids from Russia’s sooner than the previous goal of 2025.
The Baltic states are among the most heavily dependent on Russia in the EU, taking respectively 60% (Latvia), 53% (Lithuania), and 37% (Estonia) of their energy from their neighbour.
Kariņš emphasised: „we’re all in agreement that we need to move as quickly as is feasible on a technical level but certainly the political will and determination is there amongst all of us.”
