A potential terror attack was prevented in Austria after police detained a 31-year-old Latvian man who allegedly threatened to take hostages in Innsbruck. The suspect was apprehended on Monday at Salzburg’s main train station after authorities received intelligence about a planned assault.
The man was removed from a train traveling from Vienna to Innsbruck and taken into custody by officers, with support from the elite COBRA special forces unit. According to police sources, the suspect exhibited aggressive behavior during the intervention and had to be subdued.
Investigators are now working to determine the man’s motive and whether he acted alone. Several possible explanations are being examined, including mental health issues and potential ties to extremist networks.
Police have not yet disclosed details about the nature of the threat or any intended targets. Authorities emphasized that there is currently no evidence of an ongoing danger to the public, but security measures have been temporarily reinforced in key transport hubs across western Austria.
