Counterintelligence Operation at Poland’s Defence Ministry: Long-Serving Employee Suspected of Espionage

2026/02/03
in Defence

On Tuesday morning, 3 February 2026, Służba Kontrwywiadu Wojskowego (SKW) detained a long-serving employee of Poland’s Ministry of National Defence (MON) at the ministry’s headquarters in Warsaw. According to media reports, the man was arrested shortly after arriving at work, reportedly without expecting the intervention.

The detention was carried out with the involvement of the Military Gendarmerie (Żandarmeria Wojskowa) and was the result of an investigation that, according to unofficial sources, had been underway for months. Those sources claim the suspect’s activities were closely monitored, documented, and analysed, and that investigators consider the evidence gathered to be strong.

At this stage, officials have confirmed the detention but have not disclosed detailed information about the case. A spokesperson for the defence minister stated only that the arrested person is a long-time employee of one of the ministry’s departments and that the matter is linked to SKW operations, adding that an official statement would be issued after procedural steps are completed.

Unofficial reports suggest the suspected cooperation involved Russian intelligence, though the official messaging has remained more general, referring to links with a “foreign intelligence service” without naming a country. The suspect is being questioned by prosecutors, and the case has been described as “developing,” which may indicate further procedural actions—potentially including additional detentions—cannot be ruled out.

As the investigation is ongoing, the full scope of the alleged actions and any potential damage has not been made public. Until a final court ruling, the detained individual is presumed innocent.
