Construction crews have completed the breakthrough of the Kozjak Tunnel, marking a major milestone in one of the largest transport infrastructure projects currently underway in Croatia’s Dalmatia region.
The tunnel is a central part of the “New Gateway to Split” project, which is intended to create a direct road link between the A1 motorway, the city of Split and its busy ferry port.
Once completed, the new route will connect the Vučevica interchange on the A1 motorway with the Kozjak Tunnel, the DC8 state road and the Port of Split. Authorities expect the investment to shorten travel times, improve access to the city and reduce congestion on Split’s existing road network.
The project is being implemented in three phases. The tunnel breakthrough represents the most important achievement of the first phase and brings the city closer to opening an entirely new northern entrance.
Speaking during a ceremony at the construction site, Split Mayor Tomislav Šuta said the milestone was an important step towards transforming the city’s transport connections. He emphasised that the project was progressing with the support of the Croatian Government and would have long-term significance for both Split and the wider metropolitan area.
City authorities also hope that the new road infrastructure will support the redevelopment of Split’s northern districts. The plans are being coordinated with other proposed investments, including the St Duje Bridge, whose preliminary design was recently presented.
Preparations are also continuing for the third phase of the project. A spatial and transport study is being developed to determine the final alignment of the road connection between the A1 motorway and the Port of Split.
When all three phases are finished, the route is expected to provide faster and more reliable access to the city centre and ferry terminal, which is one of the main maritime transport hubs on the Croatian coast. It should also divert a significant portion of traffic away from heavily congested urban roads, particularly during the summer tourist season.
Officials describe the New Gateway to Split as one of the most important infrastructure projects for the city’s future development. In addition to improving mobility, the investment is expected to strengthen Split’s role as a regional transport centre and support the economic development of the surrounding area.
The tunnel breakthrough ceremony was attended by Mayor Tomislav Šuta, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković, Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban and Croatian Roads chairman Ivica Budimir, as well as representatives of national, regional and local authorities.
