Albanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Impeached

2023/09/08
in Politics

The impeachment of former Albanian Foreign Affairs Minister Olta Xhaçka by Prime Minister Edi Rama is linked to the illegal pre-trial detention of the mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, and her husband Artan Gaçi’s business in the Albanian Riviera. The opposition has requested the Constitutional Court to remove Xhaçka from parliamentary office after her husband was declared a strategic investor by the Rama government and is building large tourist investment in the beach of Himara.
Xhaçka, a prominent member of the Socialist Party of Albania and former Minister of Defence, has been accused of benefiting from her husband’s illegal activities in the seaside area, specifically in Drymades. She has also benefited from the right to freely use state assets for which ordinary citizens pay tax obligations.
An Albanian analyst argued that recent arrests have targeted Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government, hitting the pillars of his program. Arion Sulo commented on the sweeping reshuffle, which Rama announced during a session of their party’s Central Committee. Xhaçka’s expulsion is not interpreted as the Albanian prime minister’s intention to end Beleri’s illegal imprisonment, allowing him to be sworn in as mayor of Himara and exercise the duties elected by his fellow citizens in May.
