Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey will jointly conduct a de-mining operation in the Black Sea to ensure safe shipping and show Russia that it is not desirable to send its ships to the area. Minister of Defence Todor Tagarev stated that Russia’s actions under Vladimir Putin remain the most serious risk for Bulgaria’s security. Tagarev expects Russia to withdraw its ships if it intends to send them towards Bulgaria’s waters. Russian ships were reportedly „prowling” around Bulgaria’s Black Sea economic zone and making provocative moves against other countries’ merchant ships.
Tagarev also highlighted the risks of large-scale terrorism caused by Russia’s behaviour, stating that there is no direct threat to Bulgaria. He added that there is a risk that Hamas will take action against Israeli citizens on Bulgarian territory, which was the reason for strengthening the security of key sites. He did not plan to resign due to distorted information received from Boyko Borissov and Delyan Peevski and will decide whether to keep his post after the prime minister’s rotation in March.
