Conclusions of Rail Baltica Discussions in Riga

2023/10/16
in Infrastructures

The Rail Baltica Global Project involves collaboration in engineering of unprecedented scale between the Baltic Republics. Driving a high-speed link from Poland up to Finland, it is managed by RB Rail AS, a multinational joint venture of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Today, a delegation of Baltic Sea region parliamentarians met with Latvia’s Minister of Transport, Kaspars Briškens, and Rail Baltica delivery organisations to discuss the project’s strategic significance, implementation progress in Latvia, and integration into the European Union’s transportation network. The meeting focused on the project’s scale, infrastructure, and ecosystem, as well as the progress in construction and design throughout the Baltic region. The delegation was visiting Riga to convene the first working group session of the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC) on energy supply issues. The priorities of the working group are energy independence, digitalisation of the sector, and connectivity of transportation networks.
Rail Baltica is one of Europe’s largest high-speed infrastructure projects, aiming to establish a modern and sustainable rail link connecting Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania with the European rail network. It will be a fully electrified, double-track railway with a standard gauge of 1435 mm and equipped with ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System). With a design speed of 249 km/h, the line will significantly reduce travel times between the Baltic States and major European cities and serve as a modern infrastructure for passenger, freight, and military mobility, promoting accessibility and facilitating business, tourism, and cultural exchange.
