In a move reminiscent of the Magyar Guarda, Slunj – Croatia’s town on the Croatian border with Bosnia and Herzegovina – has announced the formation of armed self-defence units to combat the influx of illegal immigrants. MOST, the opposition party of the ruling HDZ, claims that the Croatian border is so porous that Schengen is actually redundant.
Slunj’s mayor, Miro Bulj, has warned that if the immigrants start shooting, they will respond with fire. Bulj also called on Croatia’s central authorities to deploy troops at the borders to help fight the influx of migrants. Municipal guards will be stationed at the borders connecting the region with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The number of migrants arriving in Croatia has increased by 170% this year, and asylum applications have also increased by 700%.
“We will have to unite in this area when migrants, including terrorists, start coming in uncontrollably. They carry their wars and their culture here; they don’t care about us, and the state authorities don’t care either,” said Bulj. “All countries are closing their borders, but ours remain open. One hair or nail of our child is more important to me than all the immigrants. Half of them are terrorists.”
