Romania’s Lockheed Martin company, Derco, has partnered with Aerostar to improve the operational efficiency of its F-16 fleet.
The agreement focuses on repairing landing gear, wheels, and brakes, reducing lead times and enhancing Romania’s position in the aerospace and defence industry. Romania’s top defence priorities include building up an inventory of F-16 fighter aircraft, modernising corvettes, and upgrading military infrastructure. Derco’s technology solution will ensure the readiness, effectiveness, and safety of Romanian military personnel operating F-16 fighter jets.
Lockheed Martin is expected to account for the highest revenue share in Europe, accounting for $62.8bn (€57.42bn) over the forecast period. Aerostar’s president and CEO, Grigore Filip, emphasised the company’s commitment to providing maintenance and repair activities for new aircraft fleets in Romania and the region. The agreement follows the inauguration of the first European F-16 training centre at Fetești Air Base. The Netherlands has recently stationed five F-16 fighter jets at Romania’s European F-16 training centre, training Ukrainian and Romanian pilots for missions.
Romania is actively modernizing its air force to enhance defense capabilities and align with NATO standards. The acquisition of modern aircraft, such as F-16 Fighting Falcons, reflects a commitment to air superiority. The F-16, known for its versatility and advanced technology, provides Romania with a modern and effective platform for air superiority, aerial reconnaissance, and ground-attack missions. These aircraft offer interoperability with NATO allies, enhancing Romania’s ability to participate in joint military operations and exercises.
Romania also invests in cutting-edge technologies, like air defense systems, radar infrastructure, and electronic warfare capabilities. These efforts strengthen the country’s ability to respond to evolving security challenges and contribute effectively to collective defense within the NATO framework.
