Estonia Adapting its Economy to Serve Ukrainian War Effort

2023/11/23
in Defence, Politics

The Baltic Assembly and the 29th Baltic Council will convene in Estonia’s Riigikogu parliament to discuss effective civil defence and the effects of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine on the economy. President Timo Suslov believes that the Baltic Assembly has been successful in building a resilient, secure, reliable, and sustainable Baltic region. He emphasises the importance of maintaining unity and strong support for Ukraine while exposing the true face of Russia.

The meeting will begin with an award ceremony where Baltic Assembly prizes and medals are awarded. This year, the Baltic Assembly Prize in the Arts was awarded to Estonian artist Peeter Laurits for his artistic work and the project „Biotoopia,” while the Prize in Literature was awarded to Lithuanian translator Antanas A. Jonynas for his collection of sonnets „Naujieji sonetai.” The Baltic Council, the cooperation assembly of governments and parliaments of the Baltic states, will hold its 29th meeting on Friday.

The president of the Baltic Assembly and chair of the Baltic Council of Ministers will sign a joint statement of the Baltic Assembly and the Council of Ministers. The session will continue in the afternoon, discussing the impacts of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine on the economy and effective civil defence. At the end of the session, the new president of the Baltic Assembly will be elected, and the resolution and final documents of the 42nd session will be signed. After the session, Estonia will hand over the presidency of the Baltic Assembly and the Baltic Council of Ministers to Lithuania.

The Baltic Assembly is a regional organization that brings together the parliaments of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Established in 1991, it fosters cooperation, dialogue, and coordination among the Baltic States, addressing shared political, economic, and cultural challenges. The Assembly serves as a platform for promoting regional initiatives and strengthening ties within the Baltic region. The Baltic states have small populations and believe that closer cooperation between them will strengthen their position on the international stage.
