The European Union (EU) is proposing that 27 countries contribute more funds to Ukraine’s fight against a Russian invasion, including $52.8 billion in new aid. The EU executive has proposed that these funds be used to finance additional shared spending through 2027, including extending $52.8 billion in new aid to Kyiv. The EU has provided almost €83bn in support for Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022.
The re-elected Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico however emphasised the need for guarantees that EU money given to Ukraine would not be misappropriated.
„Ukraine is among the most corrupt countries in the world and we are conditioning what is excessive financial support on guarantees that European money (including Slovak) will not be embezzled,” he said.
The European Commission is also working on a proposal to pool profits from frozen Russian state assets for Ukraine’s postwar reconstruction. The value of frozen Russian sovereign assets is €211bn.
