Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is launching a two-day official visit to Moldova, marking the first visit by a Portuguese head of state. The first day will focus on educational cooperation between the two countries’ universities, while the second day will see the signing of a memorandum between the Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (AICEP) and its Moldovan equivalent. Marcelo has been in touch with Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu to discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Moldova’s bid to join the European Union. He has confirmed Portuguese support for Moldova and Ukraine, highlighting the common origin of their languages.
A social Democrat, academic and media Pundit, Rebelo de Sousa suspended his party membership to take on the Portuguese presidency in 2016. He is known in Portugal for a his strong stance against abortion. Sandu leads Moldova’s Party of Action and Solidarity, aligned with Liberal Democrat values and is distinctive in a socially conservative Moldova for being an unmarried leader.
