Latvian national airline airBaltic, led by Martins Gauss, has expressed a desire for direct flights from Rīga to the United States in the near future. The airline is in talks with Delta Airlines to provide more convenient connectivity for U.S. travellers on flights to the Baltics. Currently, there are no direct flights between Riga and the U.S, but Gauss anticipates a connection to New York in the future. Evaluating the feasibility of direct flights to the U.S, the company finds that it is not economically feasible at the moment. The company is also expanding its fleet, however, with plans to store more planes in the Baltic States, including Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius, as well as in the Nordic countries. Due to its geographical position in the Centre of the Baltic States, Latvia makes a promising transit hub for its neighbours.
“Every year, every season, we’re going to report on a new base, like we’re about to open a new base in Gran Canaria for three months. We can choose a new base every few months, but we want to focus on the bases of the Baltic States because we connect the Baltic States,” said Gauss.
