Life Expectancy Drops in Bulgaria Amid Low Vaccination Rate

Bulgaria’s health has been under scrutiny this week. Amid a spike in reported cases of COVID, the expected average life expectancy for the entire population of Bulgaria in the period of 2020 – 2022 is now calculated at 71.9 years; down by 1.7 years from the period of 2019 – 2021, and 2 years from 2012. 
The different mortality rates among men and women is also striking, at 7.5 years (68.3 years for men, 75.8 years for women). 27 new cases of COVID-19 were also confirmed in Bulgaria in the last 24 hours, with one death. Bulgaria’s total COVID death toll is 38,369, with 1,266,254 cases cured. 89% of the new cases are people who were not vaccinated. 2,077,629 people have been vaccinated against COVID in Bulgaria, of which 945,574 received a first booster dose, and 73,004 received a second booster dose.
