On 29 November 2024, Lithuania and Rheinmetall marked the beginning of construction for a cutting-edge production plant dedicated to 155mm artillery ammunition. The milestone event included the signing of key agreements, such as a land lease and a supply contract for the procurement of 155mm ammunition. Distinguished attendees included Lithuania’s Prime Minister, Ms. Ingrida Šimonytė, the Minister of Economy and Innovation, Ms. Aušrinė Armonaite, and the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Laurynas Kasčiūnas.
The facility, situated in Baisogala, represents a significant step in enhancing Lithuania’s defence capabilities. Covering an area of approximately 340 hectares, the state-of-the-art plant will feature comprehensive shell manufacturing and load assembly pack capabilities. Operations are scheduled to commence in mid-2026, with the facility expected to produce tens of thousands of 155mm artillery shells annually.
The project involves a direct investment of €180 million in Lithuania, creating approximately 150 local jobs. Additionally, local businesses and the regional economy will play an integral role in the value chain, fostering economic growth and strengthening industrial ties within the region.
