Moldova has blocked access to over 20 Russian news sites following increased tensions between the two countries since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The Moldovan intelligence and security service issued a decree requiring internet providers to block access to 22 web pages, including Russia Today (RT) and NTV. The EU in 2022 banned Rossiya RTR/RTR Planeta, Rossiya 24/Russia 24, and TV Centre International. RT- Russia Today English, RT- Russia Today UK, RT – Russia Today Germany, RT – Russia Today France, RT- Russia Today Spanish, and Sputnik.
The Moldovan decree claims these sites are being used in an „information war” against Moldova and to promote the alteration of information disseminated from an aggressor state. Moldova has already expelled the country chief of Russia’s state news agency Sputnik, accusing it of spreading „propaganda and disinformation.” Moscow has summoned Moldova’s ambassador to protest against „politically-motivated persecution” of Russian-language media. Moldova’s pro-EU government has condemned the assault against Ukraine and alleged a Russian plot to overthrow it.
According to EU Council Decision (CFSP) 2022/884 of 3 June 2022, the ban “should be maintained until the aggression against Ukraine is put to an end, and until the Russian Federation, and its associated media outlets, cease to conduct propaganda actions against the Union and its Member States.”
