Croatia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Davor Bozinovic, announced that the former military training ground on Skradska Gora near Dugo Dol has been cleared of undergrowth to determine its suitability for a new migrant centre.
The Ministry of Interior plans to seek European Union money for the centre, with the proposal to open the registration centre in Dugi Dol. The number of migrants crossing Croatia has increased by around 170 per cent this year, and the number of asylum applications has increased by 700 per cent. The Prefect of Karlovac County, Martina Furdek Hajdin, believes the new centre would reduce the movement of illegal migrants. The head of the Karlovac Police Department, Darko Car, said the meeting was necessary because the impression had been created that illegal migration in the county is a problem. He emphasised that migrants do not threaten security and that no misdemeanours or criminal offences had been recorded this year. The Mayor of Barilovici, Drazen Perakovic, said the centre will have controlled arrival, stay, and departure.
A protest was held by about a hundred residents of Barilovici and Krnjak, who shouted „We will not camp!” and expressed opposition to building a new centre for migrants. A councillor in Barilovic Municipal Council, Jasna Lasic, started a petition against erecting a camp, collecting about 200 signatures on the first day.
