In the night, military radar systems detected further intrusions into Polish airspace by objects resembling smuggling balloons coming from the direction of Belarus, the Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DO RSZ) reported in a new statement. No threat to state security was identified. Earlier, the military had reported scrambling fighter jets in connection with Russia’s night-time attack on Ukraine.
The statement from the Operational Command of the Armed Forces appeared on Tuesday morning on the X platform. The military informed about a night-time operation in the Polish–Belarusian border region.
It concerns the entry of smuggling balloons from the direction of Belarus. “The objects were identified on an ongoing basis and remained under constant surveillance by military reconnaissance systems,” the statement reads.
As emphasized, the services did not identify any threat to Polish airspace or to the functioning of air traffic.
“The observed incidents did not differ from events recorded recently in the area of the Polish–Belarusian border,” it was noted.
Just a few hours earlier, the Operational Command of the Armed Forces had informed about another threat. In response to a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine, the military scrambled fighter jets. Patrols were conducted primarily along the Polish–Ukrainian border.
Ultimately, no violation of Poland’s border was confirmed. “We thank NATO and the German Air Force for their support; their aircraft helped ensure the safety of Polish skies today,” the statement said.
“In connection with the need to ensure freedom of action for military aviation, the airports in Rzeszów and Lublin temporarily suspended flight operations,” the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency reported in a morning announcement.
After 7 a.m., a new statement appeared. “The airports in Rzeszów and Lublin have resumed flight operations,” it read.
Hostile actions by Belarus of a hybrid nature are also directed against Lithuania.
Vilnius Airport has been temporarily closed multiple times due to suspected violations of Lithuanian airspace by balloons.
Lithuania claims the balloons are used by cigarette smugglers, but at the same time accuses Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka of failing to respond, describing these activities as a form of a “hybrid attack.”
