Romania’s number of prosumers – that is, a consumer whose cottage industry or work activity causes them to consume a high amount of electricity – is expected to reach 236,000 by the end of 2025 and surpass 350,000 by 2030. The figure was announced by Romanian energy minister, Sebastian Burduja.
The minister emphasised the importance of energy storage for short, medium, and long-term use in future funding calls through the Modernisation Fund and the „Casa Verde” Program, under which prosumers are awarded for storing energy, so that they don’t put extra strain on the grid. The Romanian grid suffers from problems relating to the different voltages its provides but, unlike Hungary – which doesn’t support prosumers per se – Romania aims to develop in order to enable more prosumers.
Investments in energy transportation and distribution are crucial for an energy transition. The country’s electricity distribution network is negatively impacted by voltage differences, and the Energy Ministry is looking to accelerate investments in electricity transportation and distribution. Nine projects by state electricity distributor Transelectrica, totalling over RON 1 billion (EUR 201 million), have already been approved and signed. Future financing programs will focus on energy storage for the short, medium, and long term, increasing the system’s capacity to accommodate more prosumers.
