Poland Signs $1.7 Billion Contract for 111 Borsuk Infantry Fighting Vehicles

2025/04/01
in Defence

On March 27, 2025, Poland’s Armaments Agency, representing the State Treasury of the Republic of Poland, signed a significant contract with a consortium comprising Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A. (PGZ) and Huta Stalowa Wola S.A. (HSW) for the acquisition of 111 Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs). The agreement, valued at approximately 6.57 billion złoty (about $1.7 billion), includes comprehensive training and logistics packages, as well as the development of technical documentation for serial production and acceptance testing programs.

The Borsuk IFV is a modern, amphibious vehicle designed to transport troops safely on the battlefield. It features the ZSSW-30 remote-controlled turret, armed with a 30mm automatic cannon, a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, and two Spike-LR anti-tank guided missile launchers. The vehicle is operated by a crew of three and can carry six additional troops.

This contract marks the first executive agreement following a framework contract signed in February 2023, which outlined the procurement of over 1,000 Borsuk IFVs and nearly 400 specialized vehicles based on the same chassis. The Borsuk is set to replace the outdated Soviet-era BWP-1 vehicles currently in service with the Polish Land Forces.

Deliveries of the 111 vehicles are scheduled between 2025 and 2029. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the dual benefits of the contract, stating, „Security and the economy, these two things are combined within the Borsuk. Security, because we gain excellent equipment developed in Poland, and the economy, because all this money goes to Polish defense companies.”

The Borsuk project began in 2014, aiming to develop a fully Polish infantry fighting vehicle. The first prototype was completed in 2017, and after extensive testing and development, the vehicle is now entering serial production. This acquisition represents a significant step in modernizing Poland’s military capabilities and supporting the domestic defense industry.
