Polish Judge Flees to Belarus

2024/05/06
in Politics

Judge Tomasz Szmydt has requested political asylum in Belarus. He held a press conference in Minsk. The Voivodeship Administrative Court and the Internal Security Agency (ABW) have commented on his case.

The Warsaw Voivodeship Administrative Court issued a statement regarding Judge Tomasz Szmydt’s flight to Belarus. „In connection with today’s media reports concerning Judge Tomasz Szmydt of the Voivodeship Administrative Court in Warsaw, we inform that Judge Tomasz Szmydt has been on vacation from April 22, 2024, to May 10, 2024,” the court stated.

The statement noted that so far, the president of the Voivodeship Administrative Court „has not received any information from the judge about his resignation.” „The court’s management, apart from media reports, does not have any information regarding his asylum request and resignation from his judicial office,” it read. Szmydt announced in Minsk that the Belarusian embassy would inform the Polish authorities of his resignation from the judicial position.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Minister-Coordinator of Special Services stated that the ABW is already handling the matter. „The Internal Security Agency has initiated control measures today to verify the scope of classified information to which the Voivodeship Administrative Court judge, who requested asylum in Belarus, had access due to his position and ongoing cases,” wrote Jacek Dobrzyński on the X platform.
