Slovakia – Two weeks ahead of early elections for which he is first in the polls, former Prime Minister Robert Fico made a strong statement, saying he was in favour of border control with Hungary, due to the pressure of illegal migration.
Leader of the Smer-SD opposition party and likely to win the next elections of September 30, Robert Fico has also accused the current Prime Minister to give up on the citizens’ security.
During his press conference, Robert Fico pointed at the growing number of illegals entering Slovakia, mainly from Hungary, recalling the situation 2015.
Robert Fico had called on Prime Minister Ludovít Ódor to reintroduce border checks in order to prevent people smugglers from entering Slovak territory unchallenged.
He also accused PM Ódor to campaign in favour of the radical left wing party Progressive Slovakia of the President Zuzana Čaputová.
For a short time, the press conference has been interrupted by former Prime Minister Igor Matovič, who used loudspeakers to do so.
Challenged and physically restrained by former Interior Minister Robert Kalinák, an ally of Robert Fico, Igor Matovič eventually has to leave the site on the demand of police officers.
Answering questions from the medi, Mr Fico explained that his was in favour of reintroducing car control at the borders in order to find and arrest smugglers.
