Following the EU’s approval of five members’ restrictions of grain imports from Ukraine, Romania has approved a mechanism for importing limited agricultural products. The agreement Bucharest struck with Kyiv will protect Romanian farmers and local production from Ukrainian imports which would undercut the local market. Romania supports Ukraine regarding grain transit, but defending the work of Romanian farmers is mandatory. „This mechanism has been agreed with both our farmers and the Ukrainian authorities,” Romanian Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu said.
According to Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, “The mechanism… will allow imports only based on a license, for limited quantities of grain, and only for our farmers and processors who demonstrate a need to replenish stocks.”
The import of wheat, corn, sunflower, and soybeans will be based on the new marketing agreement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Romania. Ukraine has developed a procedure for verifying the export of four agricultural crops in accordance with the European Commission’s decision, according to Kyiv’s Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Mykola Solskyi.
