Germany will deploy four Eurofighter jets to Romania to support NATO’s air policing mission from the end of November. Additionally, up to 80 soldiers will be deployed to a military base near Constanta. This comes after a case of suspected Russian drone debris on Romanian soil.
Five Dutch F-16 fighter jets have also arrived at a Romanian training centre to prepare Ukrainian pilots for flying the aircraft. Romania has tightened security measures along its border with Ukraine, setting up bomb shelters, air raid warnings, and anti-drone systems. The Netherlands will provide 12-18 F-16s for training, but the jets will remain Dutch property and only be flown in NATO territory.
NATO denounces Russian actions in the area as „destabilising” but sees no indication of an intentional attack against an alliance member. NATO allies also help police Romania’s airspace, with the US sending four additional F-16 jets to patrol the country in September. The training of Ukrainian pilots began in Denmark in August in partnership with other nations of the „fighter jet coalition.” The first Ukrainian pilots to undergo F-16 jet fighter training are expected to be ready to fly them by summer 2024.
