On Thursday, May 22, Romania’s Constitutional Court rejected a request from George Simion, the far-right AUR party leader, to cancel the results of the presidential election. The judges said his claims had no basis and made the decision unanimously. This means the election results can now be officially confirmed.
Simion had claimed that the May 18 election was unfair. He accused the winning side of cheating and said there was outside interference, including vote buying in Moldova. The winner of the election was Nicușor Dan, a pro-European centrist.
The court reviewed Simion’s complaint and ruled that there was no proof of wrongdoing. Their decision is final and will be sent to the Central Electoral Bureau. A full explanation will be published in Romania’s Official Gazette.
After the decision, Simion posted on Facebook, accusing the court of “continuing the coup.”
