Serbian Parliamentarian Advocates for Joining BRICS

2023/11/29
in Politics

Serbia’s ruling coalition has submitted a resolution to parliament, seeking the country’s accession to the BRICS bloc as a „clear alternative” to its European Union accession path. The resolution comes after Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa announced they would take in six new members, accelerating the bloc’s push to reshuffle the world order. The Socialist Movement (PS), led by Aleksandar Vulin, head of Serbia’s chief intelligence agency, was blacklisted by the United States in July for alleged corruption and promoting Russian interests.

The PS is in coalition with the dominant Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and has been in government for a decade. The resolution states that joining the BRICS organisation would confirm Serbia’s commitment to creating a fairer world order based on unconditional respect for international law, while limiting Western hegemony, fostering security and stability, and ensuring the „fundamental reform” of international financial institutions for equal economic development of all states.

Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates will join the BRICS bloc as of January 1, 2024, adding economic heft and potentially furthering its stated ambition to shift the balance of global power away from the West.
