Speaking at the Internal Affairs section of the Justice and Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg, European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson praised Romania’s progress in border control, migration, and asylum.
Johansson was impressed by Romania’s strengthened border controls with Serbia over the last six months and praised the measures implemented as a model for all member states. Romania and Bulgaria presented their measures to enhance border control and reinforce EU security, including the Pilot Project agreed upon with the European Commission in March 2023. The project includes more efficient national legislation, participation in the Frontex Joint Return Programme, an information management system for return cases, and advanced border control equipment.
A bridge between Serbia and Romania is also planned, with the aim of facilitating the development of the Danube region by spanning the Iron Gates. The initiative, signed by six Romanian border municipalities, aims to span 370 metres of the Danube and be the only one from Smederevo to Kladovo. The bridge would save 200 kilometres from the neighbouring land from Golubac to Moldova Nouă, a distance that neighbours must travel to reach.
