A delegation from the Slovak Parliament, led by Deputy Speaker Andrej Danko, has arrived in Moscow, Russian state agency TASS reported on Sunday. The Slovak government is seeking support from the Kremlin following Ukraine’s suspension of Russian gas transit.
TASS announced at approximately 3:00 PM Moscow time (1:00 PM in Poland) on Sunday that the plane carrying the Slovak parliamentarians landed at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow.
According to TASS, two deputy speakers of the Slovak Parliament, Andrej Danko (leader of the Slovak National Party, SNS, part of the ruling coalition) and Tibor Gašpar (from Prime Minister Robert Fico’s Smer party), plan to meet on Monday with Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of the Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament), and on Tuesday with Valentina Matviyenko, Chairwoman of the Federation Council (upper house of parliament).
The six-member delegation is scheduled to stay in Moscow until January 15. TASS reported that the Slovak parliamentarians intend to discuss „continuation of Russian gas supplies to Slovakia and prospects for a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine” during their visit to the Russian capital.
Danko, quoted by Slovak agency TASR, stated that he „wants to see what it’s like in Russia, where Western investments exist.” He added, „I want to show that people live there too, and that Germans, French, and Americans are doing business there.”
