The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, announced that he has resigned from office. His decision will take effect on February 12. According to him, this step is intended to prevent a greater political crisis in the country.
The turmoil at the top of Romania’s government continues. Now it has been compounded by the resignation of President Klaus Iohannis, who has held the office since 2014.
According to the constitution, the duties of the president will be taken over by the Senate President, Ilie Bolojan, from the National Liberal Party (PNL).
Representatives of the right wing had been calling for the president’s resignation. Let us recall that his mandate was extended after the November presidential election was annulled. A vote in parliament initiated by the opposition to suspend him from office was scheduled for Tuesday.
New presidential elections in Romania are planned for May. The first round will take place on May 4, with the second round—if necessary—two weeks later. Initially, it was assumed that President Iohannis would remain in office until that time.
Currently, the frontrunner in the polls is Călin Georgescu, who secured first place in the annulled first round of the November 2024 election.
The Constitutional Court’s December decision to invalidate the first round of voting due to suspicions of an unfair campaign and election manipulation in favor of Georgescu caused dissatisfaction and confusion among many Romanians. As a result, according to experts, it has led to increased support for the parties and candidate involved.
