Ukraine is prepared to make concessions to Hungary for EU membership over the ‘violation of the rights of the Hungarian minority,’ according to National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) secretary Oleksiy Danilov.
“There is nothing particularly complicated about it, and I do not think it will be difficult for us,” he said. The main issue is Ukraine’s recent language law, which mandates that at least 70% of minority groups, including the Hungarian minority, must receive their education in Ukrainian.
Danilov cited the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olha Stefanishyna, who is directly dealing with the issue. He stated that Ukraine is ready to make compromises to achieve EU membership and that necessary legislation has already been prepared to prevent Hungary from speculating. Danilov believes that if Kyiv swiftly meets EU requirements, the European community will not be opposed to Ukraine’s membership. Ukraine’s „homework” is to overcome corruption, and the European Commission recommended negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova to join the EU. The EU expects Ukraine and Moldova to complete their reform work by March 2024. Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, has emphasised Hungary’s „clear stance” on the issue.
