Ukraine Trains Troops in North Macedonia

2023/11/24
in Defence

Ukraine is bolstering its army with the first batch of soldiers completing training in North Macedonia. Over 100,000 soldiers have been trained in facilities of over 30 partner countries for over two years. Defence Minister Slavjanka Petrovska announced that the Balkan state will continue training Ukrainian soldiers throughout 2024 as long as necessary.

North Macedonia, a NATO member since 2020, has sent 10 batches of military support to Kyiv since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Romania has hosted instructors from other countries to train Ukrainian troops, including Greece, Slovenia, and Germany. Major General Oleksandr Kyrylenko is grateful for the joint efforts to develop the training system for the Armed Forces, which will advance the efficiency of all defence aspects in holding off the Russian Federation’s armed aggression.

The international training system currently focuses on four main urgencies: collective training of different unit levels, basic training for fresh recruits, training for commanders and junior officers, and instructions on using foreign weaponry.

North Macedonia plays a significant role in NATO as a valued ally and contributor to the alliance’s objectives. Since its accession to NATO in 2020, North Macedonia has actively participated in various capacities, enhancing regional stability and NATO’s collective defense.

Firstly, North Macedonia’s membership reinforces NATO’s commitment to the Euro-Atlantic region’s security. As a Balkan nation, it contributes to the alliance’s efforts to prevent conflict, promote stability, and address emerging security challenges in southeastern Europe.

Secondly, North Macedonia’s military capabilities strengthen NATO’s operational capacity. The nation actively engages in joint exercises, training programs, and contributes troops to NATO missions and operations. Its participation enhances NATO’s ability to respond effectively to evolving security threats.

Furthermore, North Macedonia’s membership fosters regional cooperation. By aligning with NATO, the country reinforces its commitment to democratic values, rule of law, and cooperative security. This, in turn, contributes to building trust and collaboration among Balkan nations, fostering a more stable and secure region.

North Macedonia’s strategic location is also crucial for NATO’s overall defense posture. Positioned in the Balkans, it plays a role in managing potential challenges emanating from the region, ensuring a comprehensive and integrated approach to security.

Moreover, North Macedonia’s NATO membership reflects the alliance’s open-door policy, demonstrating its commitment to promoting stability and security in aspiring partner countries. The accession process serves as an example for other nations seeking NATO membership, encouraging democratic reforms and adherence to NATO standards.
