Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union poses a challenge for EU agriculture, according to Minister of Agriculture Robert Telus.
„These are challenges for EU agriculture. But first of all for us – I mean Poland and the front-line countries. We need to talk about this. We must look for solutions that will not harm European agriculture, so that Ukraine’s accession to the EU does not harm our farmers – Polish and other front-line countries. We agree – both groups – that these issues are important and that we must take care of them,” the minister said, speaking at the Council on Agriculture and Fisheries in Brussels.
Telus discussed the issue with ministers of agriculture from the Visegrad Group countries and the coalition of five front-line countries. He emphasised the importance of finding solutions that would not harm Polish farmers and other front-line countries. The ministers also discussed the transit of Ukrainian grain through the EU, stating that it is becoming more efficient. Telus emphasised that other EU countries recognise this and hope that the EU will create a system to ensure that Ukrainian goods reach their pre-war destination. The ministers agreed that these issues are important and that they must be addressed.
