Russian Drone Hits Kyiv–Warsaw Passenger Train Near Polish Border

2026/09/14
in Defence

A Russian drone struck a passenger train travelling from Kyiv to Warsaw on Sunday morning, hitting its locomotive just two kilometres from the Polish border. No passengers or railway employees were injured, but the incident has raised fresh concerns in Poland about Russia’s increasingly aggressive attacks on transport infrastructure close to NATO territory.

The attack took place in Ukraine’s Volyn region, near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk border crossing, one of the most important road and rail connections between Ukraine and Poland.

According to Ukrainian state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia, the Russian drone hit the locomotive of the Kyiv–Warsaw passenger service. A railway monitoring team had detected the approaching threat and warned the crew in advance, allowing safety procedures to be implemented before the strike. As a result, nobody was injured.

206 passengers on board

There were 206 passengers travelling on the train. PKP Intercity confirmed that there were no Polish citizens among them and stressed that the incident occurred on Ukrainian territory, before the train was handed over to the Polish railway operator.

Despite the direct strike on the locomotive, the journey was eventually resumed. The train reached the Polish border with a delay of more than six hours and, after border procedures in Dorohusk, continued towards the Polish capital.

It arrived at Warsaw’s Eastern Railway Station shortly before 4 p.m. Passengers interviewed after their arrival said the evacuation and subsequent journey had been well organised.

Attack only two kilometres from NATO territory

The location of the strike makes the incident particularly significant from the Polish perspective.

The Russian drone hit the train approximately two kilometres from Polish territory. Another drone strike in the same border area reportedly hit a truck only around 800 metres from the Polish border, near the Dorohusk–Yahodyn crossing. Border operations were temporarily suspended.

Poland responded to the Russian aerial operation by activating military aircraft. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces later said that no violation of Polish airspace had been recorded.

Nevertheless, a military spokesman described the threat as „real and close”, noting that Russian drones had been operating and striking targets only several kilometres from Poland.

The episode therefore represents more than another Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure. It demonstrates how the geographical distance separating Russia’s war against Ukraine from the territory of the European Union and NATO has narrowed to little more than a few kilometres.

Was a diplomatic train the intended target?

There is another potentially important dimension to the incident.

The railway line is frequently used by foreign politicians and officials travelling between Poland and Kyiv. Shortly before the strike, a train carrying prominent Western figures had travelled through the same area.

Among them were former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, who were returning from the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv. Former CIA director David Petraeus was also in the area aboard another train.

Ukrzaliznytsia said it was possible that the diplomatic train had been the intended target. Its timetable had been changed and it passed through the area earlier than originally scheduled.

Bildt later said that the drone struck the train travelling only minutes behind his own.

There is currently no independent confirmation that Russia deliberately attempted to target the foreign delegation, however, and the claim should therefore be treated as a possibility rather than an established fact.

Russia targets Ukraine’s western transport network

The attack was part of a much broader Russian aerial assault on Ukraine. Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles during the overnight operation, with attacks reported across the country.

Railway infrastructure has become an increasingly important target. Ukraine’s railways are not only essential for domestic passenger transport but also form one of the country’s principal logistical connections with the European Union.

Since Ukraine’s civilian airspace remains closed, trains have also become the primary means of transport for foreign leaders, diplomats and officials visiting Kyiv. The railway connection through Poland is therefore strategically and symbolically important.

Moscow said its strikes were directed against railway and logistics infrastructure used to transport military supplies from Europe. The train hit near the Polish border, however, was a passenger service.

A warning for Poland and Central Europe

From a Central European perspective, the attack is particularly worrying because it took place on one of the physical corridors connecting Ukraine with the EU.

The railway through Yahodyn and Dorohusk is not an abstract piece of Ukrainian infrastructure. On the Polish side, the route continues through Chełm and Lublin towards Warsaw. It is part of the transport system linking Ukraine with Central Europe.

The strike therefore highlights a growing security challenge for Poland. Russian attacks on western Ukraine are increasingly taking place close to Polish territory and close to infrastructure used to move people and goods between Ukraine and the European Union.

This time, the drone remained on the Ukrainian side of the border. Nobody was killed or injured, and the Kyiv–Warsaw train eventually reached its destination.

But the distances involved are striking: two kilometres from Poland in the case of the passenger train and less than one kilometre in another strike in the same border area.

For Poland, the war was once again taking place almost literally on the other side of the border.
