Croatia’s ENNA Plans Romanian Solar Expansion With Large Battery Storage Project

2026/10/27
in Energy

Croatian energy and logistics group ENNA has agreed to acquire a Romanian solar project that combines 166 megawatts of planned photovoltaic capacity with 612 megawatt-hours of battery storage. The transaction would expand the group’s presence in Romania, although regulatory approval and construction remain ahead.

ENNA announced the agreement on 23 October; regional industry publication Balkan Green Energy News reported the details on 26 October. The buyer, ENNA Solar, intends to acquire the company holding development rights for the Medgidia project in Constanța County.

The proposed complex covers approximately 204 hectares. ENNA’s timetable envisages construction beginning in the first quarter of 2027 and electricity deliveries starting in the first quarter of 2028. Expected annual generation is approximately 266 gigawatt-hours. These figures describe the developer’s planned capacity, schedule and output, rather than an operating facility. enna.hr

Completion of the acquisition depends on Romanian foreign-investment screening and the necessary competition approvals. Until those conditions are satisfied, the share-purchase agreement establishes the terms of a proposed transfer rather than confirming that ownership has changed.

The combination of solar production and storage is central to the project’s design. Solar capacity is expressed in megawatts peak, while the battery figure measures how much energy can be stored. The two numbers cannot be read as equivalent generating capacities, and the announced storage volume alone does not establish the battery’s maximum discharge power.

ENNA already has another substantial Romanian development. Its Mihăilești solar project has planned capacity of 87.52 megawatts peak and includes 140 megawatt-hours of battery storage. Balkan Green Energy News reports that construction is advanced, with commercial operation expected in April 2027. Work began in late December 2025, marking the group’s first major investment outside Croatia. balkangreenenergynews.com

The Medgidia agreement therefore adds to an existing investment programme. It also illustrates how a Croatian company is seeking growth through electricity projects elsewhere in Central and Eastern Europe.

For Romania, the practical benefit would come when the facilities enter service: additional solar generation accompanied by storage that can shift some electricity delivery away from the moment of production. That flexibility is the rationale for combining the technologies, although actual performance will depend on the completed system.

The next milestones are approval of the transaction and the planned start of construction. The announced 2028 operating date remains a company target, with delivery still dependent on completing those earlier steps.
