US President Donald Trump has announced significant progress in talks on establishing a permanent US Army base in Poland, saying that its location could be revealed soon.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the planned facility as a potentially historic development for the Polish-American alliance. He also credited Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s leadership with helping to advance the negotiations. However, the US president stopped short of confirming that a final agreement had already been reached. Reuters

Nawrocki welcomed the announcement and declared Poland’s readiness to continue strengthening bilateral defence cooperation. He assured Washington that the Polish government would make every effort to provide the best possible location for the future base.

Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also responded positively.

“Thank you for all the efforts aimed at establishing a permanent American base in Poland. We are working together for our security,” he wrote. The minister added that close cooperation between the Polish and US presidents was producing tangible results. Wirtualna Polska

Poland formally presented the United States with a proposal for a new permanent military base in June. The Polish government had previously authorised the Defence Ministry to undertake the necessary preparations and negotiations. Kosiniak-Kamysz later said that the Pentagon was open to the proposal, although the details would still have to be settled in a bilateral agreement.

Around 10,000 American troops are currently stationed in Poland, most of them on a rotational basis. Warsaw has long sought to turn the extensive US military presence into a more permanent commitment, arguing that this would strengthen deterrence and improve the security of NATO’s entire eastern flank. The issue has become increasingly important since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Poland is one of NATO’s leading defence spenders and serves as a major logistical hub for military assistance delivered to Ukraine.

A permanent US Army base would therefore carry both military and political significance. It would demonstrate Washington’s long-term commitment to Poland’s defence and make any future reduction of the American presence more difficult.

Nevertheless, key questions remain unanswered. Neither side has yet disclosed the proposed location, the number of troops that would be permanently stationed there, the division of costs or the timetable for construction. Trump’s statement indicates that an agreement may be close, but a final decision has not yet been officially announced.
